DYSPHAGIA-FRIENDLY MEAL CREATION WORKSHOPS  

Where Clinical Expertise Meets Community Care

BACKGROUND

Client: An elderly home in Hong Kong x Hong Kong Adventist Hospital

Campaign Duration: March to May 2024 

When tasked with creating festive meals for residents with swallowing difficulties, an elderly home in Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong turned to GO Natural as their trusted resource connector to bridge clinical expertise and compassionate care. Simultaneously, Hong Kong Adventist Hospital sought to amplify its community health leadership under ESG frameworks.

 

GO Natural designed the workshops that achieved both goals:

  • For the elderly home: Safe, joyful holiday dining for dysphagia residents

  • For the hospital: Brand-building through hands-on community impact

Why This Matters

In Hong Kong, over 100,000 individuals live with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), with 60% being elderly residents in care homes and 40% attending day care services. This often-overlooked health challenge leaves many residents socially isolated during festive gatherings, as traditional celebratory foods can pose choking risks.

OUR COLLABORATIVE APPROACH

1. A Blueprint for ESG-Driven Partnerships

After This initiative demonstrates how community health projects can align with and advance the goals of multiple stakeholders. By involving professionals, it creates a win-win scenario: the elderly home benefits from a one-stop solution tailored to their kitchen equipment, workflows, and resident preferences, while the hospital contributes to society in meaningful ways, furthering its ESG objectives.

2. Expert-Led Menu Design

We partnered with Hong Kong Adventist Hospital’s dietetics team and IDDSI-certified foodservice specialists to create Lunar New Year and Dragon Boat Festival menus that:

  • Comply with The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)

  • Use 100% natural and local ingredients 

  • Incorporate nostalgic flavors that resonate with residents

3. Hands-On Workshops

  • Trained chef teams in modern culinary techniques for dysphagia-friendly dishes 

  • Shared cost-saving hacks to optimize kitchen resources 

  • Provided take-home recipe kits with practical texture modification tips
